I'm in the market for a new sewing machine. So far I'm looking at either the Janome 1600P-QC or the Elna 7300 "Quilting Queen".

Hi Lynn, I recently bought a bernina 820 which costs a fortune (i got a demo for a lot less) but i figure it should last me till i die, which i hope is a ripe old age or i will be ripped off!
ReplyDeleteI love it because it actually works, i still dont know how to use all of it, as it kinda scares me! It goes like the clappers, its got a BIG throat which is perfect for larger pieces, its quiet, it does all these neat embroidery stitches and lots of other neat stuff( i need to find a purpose for these!). It is BIG and HEAVY, so not really portable unless you are into weight lifting!
But its a fantastic machine.
the elna looks good, plenty of features you will prob have fun with this one, how much is it? If its comparable to the janome i would get the elna, make sure there is good after sales service via whoever you buy it from.
ReplyDeleteOOOOh, so exciting! I have a Viking Husqvarna-have had and used that brand exclusively for 30 yrs! Elna and Janome are both good-get the best you can afford-don't get sidetracked with too many stitches-does it sew a 1/4" seam for quilting, does the feed dogs drop for free motion quilting and do you have quilting and piecing feet included?...just a few things to look for!
ReplyDeleteI visited all the manufacturers at the Melbourne Quilt & Craft Fair last year with the view to buying a machine for The Girl. I ended up getting her the Husquvarna Emerald which was a show special of $700 down from about $1100. We're quite happy with it. My own main machine is a Pfaff 2056, but unless you want to spend $4000+ you probably don't want that one :)
ReplyDeleteI have an Elna 500 that I bought many years ago and could not fault it in any way. I used it for years making items for my handcraft shop and again recently sewing fabric dolls for charity - still as good as new! The variety of stitches are easy to use and give plenty of choices.
ReplyDeleteI am not a quilter, and am a general idiot in terms of sewing, but I love my Janome because it does penguins. Apparently it was one of the first computerised ones, I got it second hand. It is easy to thread, sews and isn't to persnickety about things. And it does penguins.
